Student Misbehaviour- Being Humane without being Judgmental

How to Deal with Student Misbehavior

We always expect medicinal and magical effect to solve behavioral and attitudinal problems of students. Students are human being. Human beings possess millions of observable and non-observable traits. Generally, educator becomes judgmental rather than an alert and minute observer. Every single act of student will not come under misbehaviour. A wise educator perceives different human traits on different layers and find out the logical solutions of students’ misbehaviour. We need not worry to create Utopian Society. We deal with smart kids (technological smart if not academical smart). We always need to handle these smart kids with care, love and affection. Never ever leave a space for a student to form a negative outlook for you. Always keep open interaction with students to form a positive attitude towards learning, academic, peers and school. We should always try to repeat and remind the essence of good behaviour. The desired changes in the students’ behaviour will be observed ——-time—-time —–time ———will be there —-keep patience –remind—-repeat——–keep doing proper effort—— —                                                                                                                         Rajeev Ranjan

Planning before entering in the classroom

A wise teacher thinks about complexity level of teaching topics, students’ understanding level, supportive activities, and resource materials and his scheduled teaching time while preparing lesson in advance. Advance lesson planning helps educator to organize class as s/he wished to organize. Advance lesson planning helps educator to become a facilitator of learning in a students’ centered classroom.

Create learning environment in the classroom

Learning is a complex phenomenon. Learning different concepts, theory, methods and techniques in different subjects are really challenging for students. They are already in pressure to develop better understanding. Wise teacher creates a students’ learning friendly environment to make them alert for attentive listening and active for participating in learning process. Wise teacher uses different tools and techniques for making them alert learners i.e. learners’ friendly gestures in the beginning of class, sharing anecdotes, asking very simple questions related to students’ previous knowledge and their previous learning experiences.

Teaching through illustration and elucidation

Wise teacher works very hard, do ample practice and rational revision to have a command on teaching topic. Command on subject increases confidence level of a teacher which further helps  him to cater the need of academically poor performer as well as gifted students’ requirement in the classroom. Teacher teaches difficult topic in a light mood but precisely focused on teaching topic. Word to word and concept to concept teaching may make students lethargy. Wise teacher gives rational illustration and elucidate particular topic by correlating to past status and its implementation in present scenario. The moment students find learning topic relevant, interesting and challenging, their involvement grow and outcome of learning reaches at satisfactorily level.

Create Students centered classroom

Teacher’s presence in a classroom is due to students’ existence in the classroom. Wise teacher creates various learning experience for ensuring active and direct participation of students in the classroom learning. If the learners’ participation is good learning experiences and learning outcome will surely the best. Learning happens most when students’ participation goes at higher level in the class.

A subject expert makes each and every student secure and respectful in a mix group of classroom. S/he ensures each student’s intact dignity and ethnicity in the classroom. Wise teacher establishes democratic values in the classroom where all students are equal in the classroom. Each student has right to inquire, right to raise logical questions and right to reply in the classroom. Democratic values instill confidence among all learners; further students develop trust, feel connected with teacher’s teaching and develop a deep bond with teacher which leads their active participation in learning process. Students’ active participation ensures best learning outcomes in the classroom.

  Conduct authentic and reliable evaluation

Authentic and reliable evaluation system helps teacher to observe students learning growth in the classroom. Better performance in the test is result of better understanding of teaching topics. Wise teacher conducts authentic test during prescribed teaching time to observe learning alertness of students in the classroom. He helps poor academic performers by using suitable teaching techniques i.e. illustration, revision, real life examples, re-teaching and by giving personal attention to them. It is kind of moral support and moral boost up for poor academic performers. Teachers develops standard test for evaluating good academic performers. Wise teacher provides advanced resource materials, web links, and questions paper for practicing more and develop conceptual understanding for touching academic heights for the best academic performers in the classroom.

Teacher provides real feedback to each and every student of class on various occasions so that students can review and reform their learning styles and other correlated things.

Proper time management to complete a pre-decided task helps a teacher to implement his teaching techniques, ideas, vision and mission in a real classroom. If a teacher chalks out a plan well in advance for executing proper teaching in the classroom, he brings the best learning experience for the students in a classroom. Ensuring best learning outcome for a mix group of students determines the teacher’s expertise.

Use of Technology- Benefits of Using Appropriate Teaching Materials in the Classroom

Technology is necessity of 21st century people. Our life is incomplete without technology. Technology helps us to grow physically, mentally and socially. Technology helps us to connect with each other. We are virtually attached with each other. We sense a real emotional bonding with each other. Widely availability of Desktop and Laptop in last decades ensured that technology is for everyone. Common people were excited to learn “how to operate it and how to use it”. Gradual development of Smart phone makes the task easy. Now people use Smartphone smartly. Of course, it is difficult to keep ourselves away from Smart phone even for short time. We feel a sense of incompleteness without Smartphone. Child starts feeling the importance of technology in life.

Integration of technology in the classroom for teaching learning process is essential and effective. Technology becomes integral part of education system. Wise teacher uses technology to ensure proper learning in the classroom. Teacher feels comfortable with technology. Student finds technology very useful for developing better understanding of different subject. Technological tools ensure effective teaching learning in the classroom.

Search engines give best result in fractions of second. Teachers as well as students face great difficulty in choosing appropriate content for the concerned topic. What can be the best ideas for selecting appropriate content for rational learning? What should be crucial factors for choosing right content? How can someone ensure the best learning outcome with the help of technology in the classroom?

People from all over world are uploading numerous teaching learning materials in various form i.e. Pdf, Word doc, images, videos and power point presentation through various platforms i.e. Slide share, YouTube etc. Without making familiar with the teaching materials before discussing/displaying and distributing can be the biggest chaos in the classroom.  We should be active, alert and sensible when we decide the content for teaching and learning process.

Students’ learning need

Learners are at the center in our teaching learning process.  A wise teacher considers students’ learning need before using technology in the classroom. If we decided to use technology in the classroom, we should consider “What is our students’ need? When we consider our students need, we consider on various factors which really hamper the students’ learning in the classroom.  Use of appropriate teaching online/offline/printed/softcopy etc increases students’ engagement and motivation; moreover it speed up learning experience in the classroom.

 Difficulty level of content/topic/text’s concept

Learning is a complex phenomenon. Technology supports our educational systems to enhance students’ learning experience through various technological tools. A well designed curriculum and syllabus cater the need of a nation. A well developed syllabus caters individual need in correspondence with culture. A wise teacher decides the difficulty level of content/topic/ text concept. S/he finds out materials through various available sources which fulfils the current need of students.

Students’ previous knowledge of content/topic/text

What is use of using technology in the classroom if we fail to evaluate our students’ previous knowledge of current teaching topic? Considering previous knowledge of our students help a teacher to decide appropriate teaching materials from where students can co-relate their existing knowledge with current teaching topic, from where they can proceed to the next level of learning.

Appropriate to students’ understanding level

A classroom consists of different types of learners’ i.e. slow learner, gifted learner and average learners. Their understanding level differs for various reasons. When we select supporting resource materials for the learners in the classroom, our resource materials should be able to fulfil mix groups of learners. A wise teacher considers his students’ level of understanding before using any technological tools and web materials in a classroom. Our main purpose to use technology in the classroom fulfill only when we cater the understanding level of each and everyone i.e. an English language teacher does intensive research before using appropriate teaching resource before entering in the classroom.

Appropriate to local learning environment (Social/Economical/National)

Every state and nation has its own cultures. A video on learning grammatical items on You Tube may be best suitable to America, Britain but may not be appropriate to China. Wise teacher uses appropriate resource materials for in a technology enabled classroom to maximize students’ learning experiences. A story from America may not be suitable to Indian students due to various reasons i.e. Name, surroundings, cultural background and language competency. A wise teacher customizes resources materials in a technology enabled classroom.

Appropriate language according to students’ level

Language is essential vehicle to learn new things. Age appropriate, understanding level appropriate and cultural appropriate language can enhance learning experiences in the classroom. What is use of using a Received Pronunciation (RP) and International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) enabled video in an Indian government school located in a remote area? Students uses mother tongue in the classroom. What is use of using printed materials consist of high standard words and sentences in a technological enable classroom? Our main objective to use technology in the classroom is to enhance students’ learning. Wise teacher assesses the appropriateness of resource materials language before using in the classroom.

Decide the content and practice well presenting before student

Choosing appropriate content and practice well before entering in the classroom establishes a teacher as fine person. Students take it positively. It helps teacher to manage the classroom systematically. What to do before entering in the classroom for using technology for maximizing learning and developing depth understanding of a particular teaching topic? Wise teacher selects appropriate different teaching resources for the classroom. S/he studies in depth. Teacher watches video in advance if s/he shows a video from You Tube and any other downloaded video. S/he prepares her classroom strategies i.e. how to use materials, when she will engage students, when she will ask questions, when she will conduct the assessment test etc to avoid confusing moment in the classroom. It is observed several times that a teacher has planned to show a power point presentation in the classroom but due to some technical reasons, he could not show it to the students, so it is better to keep materials in printed form if it is possible.

  • Read the text in depth
  • Watch the video in advance
  • Make your strategies to use material
  • Keep material in printed form if possible

Right preparation and proper planning maximize learning in the classroom. Teacher develops a better understanding for difficult topics with the help of technology in the classroom. Students always enjoy a wise subject teacher class.  So what ! Are you a wise teacher? Aren’t ——————–

Student Classroom Misbehavior-Tips and Techniques

We are unique individuals. We have unique capacity and capability to grow in life. In fact, nobody is inferior and nobody is superior in the world. We face this reality in real life situation. Handling kids in classroom is really a challenging job for teachers. We meet a group of mix students in a classroom. Each student is king of his own nature. He behaves in the class according to his nature. Teacher fixes some class rules for his students for the smooth functioning of class which ensures quality teaching learning process. What happens when a child modifies some class rules for his own interest? How does a teacher handle this problem? How does he modify a child behavior? What happens when a child performs all duties on time but sometimes overrule teacher’s instruction?

Individual teacher has different perspectives to handle classroom problems. Which behaviors should be considered as student misbehavior? There is a thin layer difference between good and bad behavior. People interpret different behaviors on different parameter at different occasions. It means a student behavior at one place is acceptable but another place same behavior is not acceptable due to various personal, societal and cultural problems.

We always see through our own spectacles. We always interpret what we want to interpret. Have we checked the emotional level of other person before labeling a behavior as misbehavior? Mr. Tappu studies in class 4th in a reputed CBSE affiliated school in a small town of Uttar Pradesh. He is an intelligent student of his class. He completes his class work and home work on time. He replies to his teacher questions in the class. He is a little bit more active in the class in other words naughty. It has been observed from last two years that he has strong desire to sit in front of teacher (1st student bench of any row). Class teacher changes students’ seat in an interval but Tappu always tries to sit on his favorite seat or after sometimes he manages to come at first student bench. Teacher counseled him. It is common incident with Tappu. Do you think this is misbehavior? If it is counted as misbehavior then what action should be taken against him? If it is counted as his passion and his impulsive desire then what corrective measures should be taken? He always obeys his teacher but two things he always love to do i.e. (a) sitting on 1st bench (b) reaching to school bus firstly at departure time. Other aspects of his behavior is that when teacher finds guilty of other misconduct, he says innocently, ma’am he(other student) supported to do this/ other also committed same mistakes. Do we need to differentiate among these 3 observations? Do we need to consider all 3 observations on same ground?

When we minutely observe the boy, we found that sitting on first student bench and running fast at departure time to get front seat was his impulsive behavior. He does not harm others’ while doing so? He has been scolded and reprimanded on various occasions for doing this activity. I was personally watching him. It is amazing that he admits his fault. He tries to modify his behavior but the outcome of his behavioral change fluctuated in an interval.

Mr. Tappu is not an aggressive and harmful student. He is not even aware that he is committing a mistake. School caters the need and interest of one and all students in the classroom and at the campus. Firstly we develop self awareness and an understanding to know other student’s right to sit in front of teacher and take seat besides driver. Gradually he realized the importance and rights of other classmates. He tried to modify his behavior but intrinsically he aspires for the same. We used same corrective measures repeatedly (1) showing empathy (2) being compassionate with him (3) fixing his seat with strict order and everything was as usual since it was not such a big issue. Notwithstanding we were very clear that Mr. Tappu should not carry this negative habit for a long time so we were trying our best to correct it on different level. It may be possible that this mild behavior can be converted into an aggressive nature to do something. We never used to miss an opportunity of observing, praising and reprimanding him.

One day an amazing incident occurred in the morning assembly. We were talking on characteristics of a good person.  We should polish our shoes on daily basis and also discussed all essential qualities of a good student. Mr. Tappu’s shoes were shining. I called him to stand in front of all students. Although, he was a confident student however he was little nervous. He was not aware the reason for standing i.e. (for punishment/for praise). I asked students to clap for him for his shining shoes. Then, he gained his confidence. Ok, it was good for him. Since, we used to scold and reprimand him on various occasions for various silly mistakes in the classroom. I went to his class and once again surprised him. I called him on teacher’s teaching platform. I asked him, “Why did I call you? He was really confused whether it was punishment and praise for him. I embraced and patted him for his well polished shoes before classmates. We did not know, “ how did he perceive this act”  but since then Mr. Tappu is most obedient boy in the class, neither he changes his  seat and tries to come on first bench, nor he runs fast at departure time to reserve his favorite front seat in the school bus.

We use various techniques to modify child misbehavior. Empathy is one of the greatest virtues to handle student misbehavior in the school premises. Wise teacher initiates corrective measure at early stage. No behavior is permanent. Human beings’ behavior is always at a flux. We learn and also relearn it. Our behavior can be modified at any stage of life. It may take time for behavioral modification but it is certain that student’s misbehavior can be corrected at any moment of life if he comes in contact with a wise teacher.

Wise teacher takes necessary action at early stage of student’s misbehavior because it is very easy to correct it but when a student becomes rigid and stringent, it may be hard for teacher to change it in a short span of time. Students’ misbehavior can be corrected and modified no matter how much stringent and rigid. It may take a little longer time. We should avoid those situations and circumstances in the classroom due to which a child becomes rigid to repeat act of misbehaving in the classroom.

When we train a mind, mind becomes rational; when we train a heart human being becomes humane. (जब हम एक मन को प्रशिक्षित करते हैं, तो मन तर्कसंगत बन जाता है, जब हम दिल को प्रशिक्षित करते हैं, तो इंसान मानव हो जाता है।) Wise teacher trains simultaneously students’ mind and heart. Let us! Be wise to become a good teacher who trains students to be a good human being.

Lesson Plan for Teaching Gifted Students-Tips and Techniques for Effective Classroom Management

Nobody  is inferior and nobody is superior, one is just oneself. Educator identifies inherent capacity of students. He nurtures the inherent talent to become more efficient and more skilled;  to do something more innovative, more expressive, more novel for the welfare of the universe. A classroom consists of mix group of learners i.e. academically good, average and poor in academic performance. A classroom consists of different types of learners i.e. visual, auditory, kinesthetic so on and so forth.

Preparing good lesson plan which caters the need of different types of learners is essential quality of a teacher. Teacher prepares the best lesson plan for ensuring effective teaching learning in the classroom. It is really a challenging job for a teacher to cater the needs of all different types of students in a class. Gifted students always pose a challenge before a teacher. They are intelligent students. They have sharp memory. Gifted students develop understanding of a topic very fast. They complete the classwork and home work on time. Sometimes gifted students complete the task very soon in the classroom. They can not sit idle in the classroom. They may feel boredom. They start doing mischievous acts which may create discipline problem in the classroom.

A wise teacher prepares an intensive lesson plan for gifted students to execute a better classroom management skill. Advance planning of topic/lesson helps educator to create learning environment in the classroom. Teacher should use best available materials to cater the need of brilliant students of the class.

Best material related to the concerned teaching topic

A wise teacher prepares best teaching materials for his teaching topic. A teacher fulfills needs of all students of a classroom. No students’ progress should be hamper in a classroom. Teacher has to think progress of all students. It may take a little more time to develop understanding of teaching topic for average and below average performer of the class, however it may be possible that gifted learners will complete the task very soon; therefore a wise teacher produce advance material to the gifted students and guides them to complete it in certain time. Teacher engages gifted students through producing good materials with students. Teacher arranges all materials well in advance for handling gifted students in the classroom.

Advanced questions for good students i.e. worksheet, practice paper, HOTS questions

Wise teacher develops worksheet, practice paper and different HOTS questions for various gifted students in the classroom. Generally gifted students solve all simple and basic textual question easily. Teacher prepares HOTS questions. When general students solve factual and global questions in the classroom that time teacher distributes some HOTS questions to the gifted students. It keeps students engaged in the classroom. Usually teacher prepares all these questions in advance which saves teacher times and help him to manage the class effectively.

Extended challenging alternative activities for good students to enhance thinking skills

Activity based teaching learning process maximize learning in the classroom, but sometimes it creates chaos in the classroom if the teacher could not design alternative advanced activities for gifted students. Designing alternative advanced activities for the best performers of the class helps teacher to take necessary required action for all learners. It ensures maximum involvement of each and every learner in the classroom. Gifted students utilize maximum time in learning activities. As soon as gifted students complete a given task, teacher personally assign a new challenging task to solve in the classroom. When students become busy in performing advanced task, then teacher handles other students of the class smartly.

Proper time management for different tasks and activities

Gifted students are usually independent learners. They perform all the task within a time. Teacher prepares his lesson plan precisely and s/he designs task minutely with minute to minute activities. Teacher prepares lesson plan properly i.e. preparation/ ice breaking activities, presentation of topic , students activities during the lesson , evaluation of learning through different tools during the lesson and final assessment before final bind up of the class. He shares time limit with students and encourages students to finish the task withing the time.

Share instructions precisely to avoid confusion in the class

Wise teacher shares precise and concrete guidelines to avoid confusion among students in the classroom. His instructions quench the curiosity of all different types of learners in the classroom. They follow teacher’s guidelines to complete the task on time. Insturctions and guidelines related to learning activties should contains less words but it should be effective. It saves time in the classroom. Gifted students focus on completing tasks rather clarifying doubts over ‘how to complete the task’. Effective teacher uses his guidelines for effective learning outcomes in the classroom.

Nobody is inferior and nobody is superior.  No palm line and no thumb impression are same in this world. Every child is unique. Every child’s learning style is unique. We are unique.Teacher explores the fathomless world of knowledge before the gifted students.

Planning a Lesson-English Language Teaching-Developing Writing Skill- Example

A well developed lesson plan is a road map of a wise educator. Educator’s expertise is reflected in his/her lesson plan. It is architecture of teacher’s expertise.

Educator prepares lesson plan according to nature of teaching topic, nature of students and nature of students’ learning. Sometimes, we plan a lesson for one period, sometimes we plan a lesson for special purpose, and sometimes we plan our lesson as Integrated Lesson Plan, where we focus on particular topic/concept. Educator decides accordingly. We will discuss different lesson plan format and some of sample lesson plan from different subject teachers. They think that they write the best lesson plan, however I think that there is always space, and opportunity for improvement. We are educator.   Educator may feel free/ open to accept or reject, partially accept or partially reject this lesson format/sample. Wise educator will draw the best from these lesson plan samples/improve it according to need. Let us add some valuable points and modify/customize according to need:-

When we closely monitor different teacher, different subject teacher, different school, state and nation’s lesson plan, we find same values, however writing style of lesson plan may differ from one culture to another culture and from one school to another school or from one group of schools to another group of schools. Effective learning is the soul nature of writing integrated lesson plan. Students’ learning is educator’s sole purpose. Students exist at the center in pedagogical perspectives. Proper planning, relevant activities, relevant presentations, relevant questions, relevant illustrations, integration of life skills and integration of technology help wise educator to impart quality education and effective learning in the classroom.
