Comprehensive Sex Education in School-“Why & How”

Comprehensive Sex Education in School

Education helps to develop a better understanding for the self. Educated person perceives self and society.  Education develops the ability to think independently, rationally, critically and creatively. Education imparts conscience. Conscience helps us to live a meaningful life. In fact we know a conscious person develops a better understanding for self and surrounding.

Comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) is need of 21st century globalized children for living a healthy life. It is time to empower children and young age people without making differences among caste, creed and culture. Comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) is one of the unrecorded fundamental rights of children. We have rights to accept the thing as it exists.

Great philosopher and international spiritual ‘guru’ Rajnish quoted “truth is truth, and nobody should debar from it”. What is wrong with comprehensive sexuality education (CSE)? Tell it the way it is. What can we hide from our children? Children are very perceptive. Even if we do not tell them, they will discover it on their own. They are smart, intelligent and equipped with Smart phone.

World Wide Web dissolves all the layers and differences between caste and creed, educated and uneducated, literate and illiterate elite class and down trodden, poor and rich. World Wide Web has brought one of the greatest revolution. We are witness of this revolution.

Can we stop our child inquiring about sexuality? We cannot stop the natural flow of a river? Water always finds out its way to move ahead. It goes towards down and down. If we cannot stop natural journey of water, so what should be we do? A wise person channelizes the strength of water and gives it right direction. Sexuality possesses the nature of water. Comprehensive sexuality education channelizes intrinsic impulses of children in right direction.

Parent and teacher face a big question when it comes for educating their child about comprehensive sex education. We do not find a big difference between developed countries and developing countries. Only on difference I could find out that is legalizing age for giving consent for sex and marriage, other than this we work as moral police. Asian countries’ legal age of consent for sexual activity varies from age 12 to 21. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ages_of_consent_in_Asia).

Countries Age of consent for sexual Activity
13 years , 15 years South Korea, North Korea
14 years Austria, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Prorogues
15 years Greece, Poland, Sweden
16 years Belgium, Netherlands, Spain and Russia
16 years United Kingdom
18 years India
14 years China

If globalized citizen consider that 13 years old boys and girls can give consent for intercourse then we need to think to provide comprehensive sex education to our kids’ right from tender age to save them from several unwanted diseases. Growth of a child from ignorant child to a smart child is changed due to prosperity in our life, better living standard and different food habits. Scientific research study reveals that maturity of a girl child can happens at the age of 7 years. (https://www.aap.org).  It is necessary to develop a comprehensive curriculum to develop appropriate knowledge and skills to love a healthy sexual life.

UNESCO recognized comprehensive sexuality education as an age-appropriate, culturally relevant approach to teaching about sexuality and relationships by providing scientifically accurate, realistic, nonjudgmental information* (UNESCO, 2009. International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education).

What are common advantages of comprehensive sexuality education?

  1. Develop physically and mentally a healthy citizen
  2. Keep away from sexual transmitted disease/infections i.e. HIV,
  3. Reduce teenage unwanted pregnancy
  4. Reduce domestic violence

Education is the greatest remedies for coming out from several catastrophes in our life. Comprehensive sexuality education will empower children and young age people to take necessary precautions for living a healthy life. Precaution is better than cure.

Sexual desire and sexual intimacy are intrinsic and impulsive in its nature. We can hide and we can forcefully stop it but we cannot efface it. Rational education imparts skills, values and knowledge among us. Sexuality education addresses most sensitive aspects of human life. Comprehensive sexuality education programme should sensitize the young age people for developing positive values towards gender differences and awareness for own physical and mental development at this stage.

Age appropriate comprehensive sexuality education

Educated world citizen considers importance of age appropriate comprehensive sexuality education. What should be taught at particular age group children? How much should be taught at particular age group children? We are  living in a data world. Children smartly handle smart phone at the age of 5. Children become smart at the age of 8 and develop sensitive nature towards opposite sex. Comprehensive sexuality education curriculum should cater the need of these smart children.

Scientifically accurate comprehensive sexuality education

Generally children inquire different information with the materials available on Web World Wide (WWW) which may or may not be written by expert people. Web World Wide (WWW) has fathomless resources written on sexuality education. Expert people know the technical and scientifically importance of different physical development and different physical and mental need of human beings. To be Ignorant is better than incomplete knowledge. When we don’t know about something, we show hesitation to do experiments in our life due to various reasons but when we know something incompletely, incompleteness  gives us  a sense of achievement and confidence which leads us to experiment with the ideas that possibly leads to bad health i.e. (a) how to keep ourselves neat and clean during periods, (a1) myth and facts about periods (b) how to use contraceptive pill or other available medication to avoid pregnancy,(c) how to use condom to avoid unwanted pregnancy and other transmittable diseases i.e. HIV , (d) when to consult doctor for discussing different bodily changing symptoms, (e) how to keep hygiene during oral sex, (f) why to avoid doing sexual activities at age between (8-15-16-) (g) with whom should we discuss sex related problems at first, (h) What are dos and do not before indulging in sexuality, (i) how to share it with other, (j) other myth and facts about sexuality. Scientifically based education will help our children and young age people to live a healthy life.

Cultural appropriate comprehensive sexuality education

Human beings are socially connected to each other. We accept and respect the existence of other family members and society members. We are unique but we are culturally dependent on each other which help us to live in a peace and harmony. Sexuality is big taboo word for the society. It is universal truth but we are hiding so many things to other person due to cultural connection. Game of hide and seek leads to health hazards. Parents and teachers avoid healthy discussion on sexuality. We face a great question before starting a healthy discussion on sexuality with our children and young age people,(a) how to start it (b) who will start it. We face same dilemmatic situation as “who will bell the cat” due to cultural perspectives.

Cultural limitation and restriction are big hurdles for imparting comprehensive sexuality programme at world level. If comprehensive sexuality education programme is developed and customized to address different cultural limitation, then only we will be successful in imparting it for common people. Comprehensive sexuality education programme has a great vision to sensitize young generation, “how to keep ourselves healthy”. Comprehensive sexuality education programme sensitizes world citizen to be protective, active and alert for own healthy life.

Comprehensive sexuality education on realistic ground

Sexuality is a taboo word for each one of us. We know its reality but we avoid decorating in words. We cannot neglect the reality to keep our young age general healthy. Sexuality related education programme will help our child to take a wise step. If we fail to educate them, then it will be more hazards for them. They inquire and investigate it through several unreliable sources i.e. friends, World Wide Web (www) and other cheap resources. Comprehensive sexuality education helps children to grow wisely and keep themselves healthy.

Comprehensive sexuality education with nonjudgmental information

Healthy and integrated children can think and perform better. How to impart comprehensive sex education is the biggest challenge for different policy and educational stakeholders? What are the specific words chosen for imparting sex education? Do words create negative impact on child?  Wise educator and parent use appropriate words to impart sexuality education. Wise educator use simple and concrete words to describe essential facts and concepts. Educator avoids a situation where child confuses himself with complex and confusing words. Essential truth of life should be shared in nonjudgmental form and our words and phrases consist of deep meaning based on facts.

Wise parent and educator express truth of life in as simple as sexuality “is”.

Sex Education for Children: Need to implement effective sexuality education programmes

Child is curious to explore the known and unknown world’s myth. What do we hide? What can we not hide from children? Why could we not hide from our kids?  Do we hide the truth? Could we share the truth to avoid a child being a conflict personality? Child is very sensitive. If a mature adult cannot control his desire and passion; then how can we expect same from our child? Generally it is observed that if we do not share some crucial information by considering their age and mental status, they try to discover it on their own way.

Learning is transmittable and communicable. Child is very active learner. He wants to learn so many things at a time. Relevant knowledge about sexual health and our body is certainly help a kid for living a healthy life. Children need to be protected. Sex is a simple phenomenon. Sex may be devastating physically and mentally traumatic when we have no knowledge about this.

World Health Organization data on puberty, menstruation, reproduction, contraception, pregnancy, abortion, unsafe abortions, homosexuality and premarital sex and sexually transmitted disease awakes and alerts us to consider sex education as demand of time. We think positively about sex education or to keep the mouth shut on behalf of cultural background but situation is alarming on world level.

We need to consider and ensure proper sexual health knowledge from a 5 year old child to 18 years young people. UNESCO data on Sexual Health can be worried us. Situation is more or less same in developed and developing countries. I was not amazed to read several statistical data on watching pornography related materials in all over world. More than thousands million viewers (age between 6-18) visits thousands of sexual related websites.  Viewers (age between 6-18) from different corners of the world endorsed their involvement in watching videos and indulged in sexual activities which resulted in bad health, premature pregnancy,  and sexually transmitted disease due to unprotected and unhygienic sexual activities.

We know the negative effect of unprotected and unhygienic sexual activities due to lack of knowledge of sex as well as lack of sharing and caring within family circle. How long can we hide the fact? How long can we treat sex and sexual health as taboo for the society? There is only one truth that sex is core issue for us right from the evolvement of human society. It is not exaggerated to say that human civilization invented fire at first but human civilization were first felt the need of sex. Sex is such a natural phenomenon but still sex education is one of the most complex issues in 21st century globalized village. Debates are going on whether to provide sex education or not and its negative as well as positive impact on kids as well as society. In fact it is more critical and crucial issue for developing a child as an integrated personality.

We cannot avoid sex and we cannot stop people to feel intrinsic and natural desire for it and of course, strong charm for sex but certainly we can channelize sexual urge in right direction. Friend, parent and teacher can ignore the question raised by a child (6-17) but World Wide Web (www) welcomes our question and responds quickly with millions and millions of answer within .0001 second.  We find an endless world of most extreme images and videos and next second a new story begins in a fraction of second. It would be worth mentioning about a state Bihar where national population council surveyed unmarried young generation (15-19 years) and the data is 14.1 % of unmarried adolescent boys and 6.3 % of unmarried adolescent girls had premarital sex; and of them, 22 % boys and 28.5 % girls had premarital sex before 15 years. Story is big but fact is very simple. Can be sensitize our last decade born generation about sexual health issues? Can we ensure our last decade born generation to receive accurate, authentic and age appropriate information related to sexual health and sexuality?

Integration of sophisticated technology and fast growing world of World Wide Web (WWW) have been equipped young generation (5-17 years) with latest technology to use but major issues to train this group of people “how to use”, “when to use” and “why to use”; considering about these constructive as well as destructive weapons should be the sole concern for educated and intellectual society, otherwise we will develop a torn and conflict personality for next decades. This generation (5-17years) explores world of sex every day.  They try to know everything but they pretend to be unknown person. They indulge in it since it is our intrinsic need, which resulted in an unhealthy life, premature pregnancy, unsystematic abortion and carries transmitted disease HIV.

It is high time. We cannot stop using latest and sophisticated technology, exploring sex and sexual world, getting into it but we can surely educate them about “how to use”, “when to use” and “why to use” and “how much to use”. No doubt at all, almost all of us may have faced same dilemma but we have to accept this challenge to educate our kids, to aware our kids and sensitize our kids about the value of word “sex” in a wider perspective. It is essence of life. We can cover, conceal and hide but cannot ignore and avoid it in our life; therefore global citizen needs to develop global perspective and global acceptance for providing “sex education” for the welfare of 21st century young generation. Educated and intellectual society need to go one step ahead and sensitize our young generation (5-17 years) to become a healthy person. What do you think? Lets us think together for shaping a world class integrated citizen!

Yoga and Meditation: Benefits and Best Characteristics Features-Why We Should Integrate Yoga in Our Life?

Yoga and Meditation are most scientific, practical and observable phenomena not only in 21st century but right from the rise of civilization. India is the mother place of “Yoga and Mediation”. Of course, credit goes to Patanjali who explored the beauty of Yoga before the world. Earlier there was some confusion regarding scientific and practical approach of yoga in western civilization. It is really interesting facts that now each and every corner of the world has been taken notice about the impact of yoga and meditation in day to day life.

We are living in globalized village. Attitude and aptitude of person have been completely changed. Much focus has been given to individual freedom and nuclear family. Materialistic world became intruders of each one life. World became mechanistic. Everyone is running behind everything. People are losing their self identity. Industrialization has its own impact on common man. People are living in such confusion and chaos life. In fact, individual is on verge to break into pieces.

Why do we need to integrate “Yoga and Meditation” in our Life?

1.     Yoga and meditation integrate our body and mind

Yoga and meditation are integration of mind and body. It dissolves at a point. It helps us to keep us physically and mentally awakened and alive.

2.     Excellent tool and techniques to keep mentally healthy

Yoga and meditation provide freedom to an individual to practice it at any place and anywhere. An individual can practice it while travelling on a train/bus/aeroplane. We need only a space for sitting comfortably. An individual can perform meditation even in bed before sleeping. We can exercise it without taking stress of time. We feel free to do it for 5 minutes or 25 minutes in a day. There is no bar of morning, afternoon or day and night. Everything is in our hand and depends on our will to practice it regularly. This is beauty of yoga and meditation.

The posture should be steady and should be very, very blissful, comfortable. If you can steady and comfortable in a chair, it is perfectly okay- no need to try a lotus posture and force your body unnecessarily. (Osho)

3.     Yoga and meditation provide an opportunity to explore self

We are active member of materialistic and Apps enabled world. We are always in stress without a reason. We feel heavily stressed when we do not find our brush, toothpaste, tie, shoes or any other essential items at right place. Interesting fact of modern life is that we jump into a dying situation if we could not find our smart phone in our pocket. Most of the time, we communicate with outer world. Yoga and meditation provide an excellent opportunity to delve into one self, to examine oneself and to explore oneself for living a healthy and peaceful life.

4.     Yoga and meditation always fortify our mind to think wisely and act wisely

Yoga and meditation develop positive perspectives and exhibit ways to look self and societal issues in a wider perspective. Meditation is way to move towards negative to positive perspective of life. Firstly, yoga and meditation purify our inner soul and mind. Secondly, it creates a space in our soul and mind. Positive attitude exists only in a healthy soul and mind.

5.     The beauty of flexibility lies in yoga and meditation

Yoga and meditation make us flexible due its nature of flexibility. No need to worry about any materialistic items during performing yoga and meditation. Only we need a self awareness and self will power to keep us healthy, wealthy and wise.

6.     A healthy and peaceful life without a price

Yoga and meditation are available for everyone beyond caste, creed, culture, economy based society and nation. We can do it at our own pace, place and price. It is we who decides whether we will practice yoga on a branded mat/a piece of cloth and on the grass in the lap of nature. Money is not an issue at all in practicing “Yoga and Meditation”. It is purely a gift from rich Indian cultural ethos of Patnajali to develop a pure soul and pure mind.

Westernized lifestyle and fast living have brought in stress in peoples’ lives and taken it to a whole new level today. Where earlier stress was a word used by a selected age group or those who worked long hours, today everyone from kids to highly aged people is well aware of stress or exhaustion. In such a scenario, Meditation subliminal relaxation has come up as a solution for fighting all the stress, pressures, fatigue and weariness people are experiencing these days.

Yoga and Meditation: Benefits of Yoga and Meditation for Teacher-Healthy teacher develops healthy mind

Teachers are the real builders of the nation. They are the pillars to uphold the national aspirations of progress. The teachers’ role in the growth, development and prosperity of the nation is undeniable. It is the teachers who mould the future society and influence the coming generations towards successful achievement of the national goals. If the teachers have to perform their duties with dedication and sincerity they must possess adequate mental health.

Everywhere I found that teachers are over burdened with different tasks at school level. They felt embarrassing situation to handle multitasks on same day and date. In fact, we are aware that in private organization, there are several factors which affect teachers’ personal as well as public life. Every day they have to perform same or other tasks i.e. syllabus completion, notebook correction, examination, discipline, completion of CCE Register as well as obeying boss meaningless order on daily basis.

School teachers develop schemes of work and lesson plans in line with curriculum objectives. They facilitate learning by establishing a relationship with pupils and by their organization of learning resources and the classroom learning environment.  School teachers  develop and foster  the appropriate  skills  and  social  abilities  to  enable  the optimum development of children, according to age, ability and aptitude. They assess and record progress and prepare pupils for the exams. They link pupils’ knowledge to earlier learning and develop ways to encourage it further, and challenge and inspire pupils to help them deepen their knowledge and understanding. In nutshell, I can say that teachers have to participate actively in “Scholastic and Co-scholastic Activity” on daily basis. Parents pose a difficult challenges before the teachers to develop their kids as hero of the society despite the students are cooperative or non cooperative. Teachers have really tough time.

Teacher cannot escape from performing their expected tasks. In fact in private organization boss knows only two words “Tasks and Output” like chanting mantras of God. There are no other remedies to save or avoid from the institutional expectation within a time frame. So teachers always feel stress to handle these situations smartly; most of the teachers are facing problems all around, starting from family, foe and friend, wife, husband and career growth so and so forth. Due to excessive stress teachers feel pity on them and become of the victim of the society and the organizations.

A mentally healthy teacher is one who has confidence in himself and his pupils, one who expects much and gets much, one who is concerned for the future citizens of India.   Teachers are expected to be mentally healthy but the problems of teachers are more than what it was in the past.   In addition to the loss of special recognition, the profession has been infested with a number of other problems, such as enormous rise in the work load, lack of security of service, too much domination by the political bosses under  local  board  managements,  growing  indiscipline  among  the  students,  delayed promotions and poor school climate.

The teacher has to cope with so many stressful and frustrating situations which results in mental ill health.   A  teacher,  who  is  not  mentally  happy,  will  breed discontentment and dissatisfaction which will have a long term effect on the pupils. Therefore, mental health of teachers is a crucial issue to be tackled by educationists and all those concerned with the teaching profession.

Yoga and meditation practice have a highly positive impact in the management of stress related problems. The strong need is that the various aspects of yoga may suitably be embraced as a part of regular training particularly among the teachers. Yoga and meditation have long lasting impact on human mind. Teacher needs to adopt Yoga and Meditation in daily life. I do not think that we should do it very intensively but we should do it regularly.

We should develop a habit of doing it without thinking too much. We can start our day with walking a mile in the lap of nature and practicing “Surya Namskar” regularly at a corner of our home. It will surely bring a massive change into a person life. We can practice “Anulom-Vilom”; whenever we have time to do it. Practicing of yoga and meditation is most crucial factor, because everyone is thinking to practice it but a few people makes it happen, that makes a big difference in a person’s life.

I firmly believe that in this modern era of anxiety and high expectation to perform the best in this industrialized and materialistic global world. Yoga and Mediation play vital role to heal out individual’s stress. Modern world counts each and every moment of individual’s performance and contribution to a particular organization. People feel so much stress in day to day life. They feel insecurity on daily basis. Meditation and Yoga help individual to come up with the problem as well as prepare an individual to live healthy, happy and prosperous life.

Yoga and Meditation: A Brief Introduction

Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual discipline, originating in ancient India. The goal of yoga, or of the person practicing yoga, is the attainment of a state perfect spiritual insight and tranquility while meditating on the Hindu concept of divinity or Brahman. The word is associated with meditative practices in Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism.

The Sanskrit  word  ‘yoga’,  the literal meaning of “yoke”, from a root yuj meaning to join, to unite, or to attach. As a term for a system of abstract meditation or mental abstraction it was introduced by Patanjali in the 2nd century BC. Someone who practices yoga or follows the yoga philosophy with a high level of commitment is called a yogi or yogini.

The goals of yoga are varied and range from improving health to achieving mokasha.  Within the Hindu monist schools of Advaita, Vedanta, Shaivism and Jainism, the goal of yoga takes the form of moksha, which is liberation from all worldly suffering and the cycle of birth and death (samsara), at which point there is a realization of identity with the Supreme Brahman. In the Mahabharata, the goal of yoga is variously described as entering the world of Brahma, as Brahman, or as perceiving the Brahman or Atman that pervades all things. For the bhakti schools of Vaishnavism, bhakti or service to Svayam  Bhagwan itself may be the ultimate goal of the yoga process, where the goal is to enjoy an eternal relationship with Vishnu.

In fact, traditionally, yoga is a method joining the individual self with the Divine, Universal Spirit or Cosmic Consciousness. Physical and mental exercises are designed to help achieve this goal, also called self-transcendence or enlightenment. On the physical level, yoga postures, called asanas, are designed to tone, strengthen and align the body. These postures are performed to make the spine supple and healthy and to promote blood flow to all the organs, glands and tissues, keeping all the bodily systems healthy. On the mental level, yoga uses breathing techniques (pranayama) and meditation (dhyana) to quiet, clarify and discipline the mind. One should never forget that yoga is not a religion, but a way of living a healthy and peaceful state of mind. Beyond doubt Yoga originated in ancient India and is one of the longest surviving philosophical systems in the world. It is the gift of the oldest Vedic philosophy to the modern world.

It is now an open secret that Yoga harmonizes mind with body that results in quantum benefits. Yoga through meditation works remarkably to achieve this harmony. In fact these work together in achieving the common goal of unity of mind, body and spirit – a state of eternal bliss. This broadens outlook of a person towards life. Our emotions seem to be associated with our mind and this is what makes human beings different from computer systems.

TRADITIONAL BRANCHES OF YOGA

Under the Vedic system there are four main or primary yoga branches from which most other types of yoga emerge.

They are:

  1. Jnana Yoga – The path of wisdom. Covers Yama and Niyama and is the  science of acquiring proper knowledge.
  2. Bhakti Yoga – The Yoga of universal love and affection.
  3. Karma Yoga – The Yoga of selfless service that covers Pratyahra and is the science of action.
  4. Raja Yoga – The highest Yoga. Covers Dharana, Dhyana, and Samashi and is the science of concentration and meditation.

Meditation: Contemplation to concentration

The word meditation is used to describe practices that self-regulate the body and mind, thereby affecting mental events by engaging a specific intentional set. These practices are subset of those used to induce relaxation or altered states such as hypnosis, progressive relaxation, and trance- induction techniques (Vaitl et al. 2005). The English word meditation comes from the Latin root word ‘ meditari’, which derives from the same root as the word meaning- to heal. The practice of meditation set in motion process that leads to the restoration of a person’s physical, mental and spiritual well-being. The English connation of the word – meditation is therefore more associated with healing and relaxation (Adiswarananda, 2004).Meditation is also defined as concentration (Continuous thinking) and sometimes as contemplation (repetitive thinking). However, in yogic understanding meditation is not mere concentration but it is more than concentration. According to Swami Vivekanand – The power of attention of mind, when properly guided, and directed towards the internal world, will analyze the mind, and illuminate facts for us. The powers of mind are like rays of light being dissipated; when they are concentrated they illuminate everything. The goal of meditation has complete absorption in the object of meditation (Samadhi), finally leading to communion or union with the Ultimate Reality. The goal of meditation is the cessation of all miseries through the realization of the indwelling self, or ‘Purusa’, which is Pure Consciousness. The benefits of meditation are threefold: physical, psychological and spiritual. I would like to state “Krishna” suggestion about Yoga.

योगस्थ: कुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनंजय ।
सिद्ध्यसिद्ध्यो: समो भूत्वा समत्वं योग उच्यते ।।
(yoga-sthaḥ kuru karmani sanyugam tyaktvā dhananjay
siddhy-asiddhyoḥ samo bhutvā samatvam yoga ucyate)

Bhagavad Gita 2.48

It means” “Be steadfast in yoga (yoga-sthaḥ), O Arjuna. Perform your duty (kuru karmani) and abandon all attachment (sangam) to success or failure (siddhy-asiddhyoḥ). Such evenness of mind (samatvam) is called yoga.”

I firmly believe that in this modern era of anxiety and high expectation to perform the best in this industrialized and materialistic global world.
