Student Misbehaviour- Being Humane without being Judgmental

How to Deal with Student Misbehavior

We always expect medicinal and magical effect to solve behavioral and attitudinal problems of students. Students are human being. Human beings possess millions of observable and non-observable traits. Generally, educator becomes judgmental rather than an alert and minute observer. Every single act of student will not come under misbehaviour. A wise educator perceives different human traits on different layers and find out the logical solutions of students’ misbehaviour. We need not worry to create Utopian Society. We deal with smart kids (technological smart if not academical smart). We always need to handle these smart kids with care, love and affection. Never ever leave a space for a student to form a negative outlook for you. Always keep open interaction with students to form a positive attitude towards learning, academic, peers and school. We should always try to repeat and remind the essence of good behaviour. The desired changes in the students’ behaviour will be observed ——-time—-time —–time ———will be there —-keep patience –remind—-repeat——–keep doing proper effort—— —                                                                                                                         Rajeev Ranjan

Student Classroom Misbehavior-Tips and Techniques

We are unique individuals. We have unique capacity and capability to grow in life. In fact, nobody is inferior and nobody is superior in the world. We face this reality in real life situation. Handling kids in classroom is really a challenging job for teachers. We meet a group of mix students in a classroom. Each student is king of his own nature. He behaves in the class according to his nature. Teacher fixes some class rules for his students for the smooth functioning of class which ensures quality teaching learning process. What happens when a child modifies some class rules for his own interest? How does a teacher handle this problem? How does he modify a child behavior? What happens when a child performs all duties on time but sometimes overrule teacher’s instruction?

Individual teacher has different perspectives to handle classroom problems. Which behaviors should be considered as student misbehavior? There is a thin layer difference between good and bad behavior. People interpret different behaviors on different parameter at different occasions. It means a student behavior at one place is acceptable but another place same behavior is not acceptable due to various personal, societal and cultural problems.

We always see through our own spectacles. We always interpret what we want to interpret. Have we checked the emotional level of other person before labeling a behavior as misbehavior? Mr. Tappu studies in class 4th in a reputed CBSE affiliated school in a small town of Uttar Pradesh. He is an intelligent student of his class. He completes his class work and home work on time. He replies to his teacher questions in the class. He is a little bit more active in the class in other words naughty. It has been observed from last two years that he has strong desire to sit in front of teacher (1st student bench of any row). Class teacher changes students’ seat in an interval but Tappu always tries to sit on his favorite seat or after sometimes he manages to come at first student bench. Teacher counseled him. It is common incident with Tappu. Do you think this is misbehavior? If it is counted as misbehavior then what action should be taken against him? If it is counted as his passion and his impulsive desire then what corrective measures should be taken? He always obeys his teacher but two things he always love to do i.e. (a) sitting on 1st bench (b) reaching to school bus firstly at departure time. Other aspects of his behavior is that when teacher finds guilty of other misconduct, he says innocently, ma’am he(other student) supported to do this/ other also committed same mistakes. Do we need to differentiate among these 3 observations? Do we need to consider all 3 observations on same ground?

When we minutely observe the boy, we found that sitting on first student bench and running fast at departure time to get front seat was his impulsive behavior. He does not harm others’ while doing so? He has been scolded and reprimanded on various occasions for doing this activity. I was personally watching him. It is amazing that he admits his fault. He tries to modify his behavior but the outcome of his behavioral change fluctuated in an interval.

Mr. Tappu is not an aggressive and harmful student. He is not even aware that he is committing a mistake. School caters the need and interest of one and all students in the classroom and at the campus. Firstly we develop self awareness and an understanding to know other student’s right to sit in front of teacher and take seat besides driver. Gradually he realized the importance and rights of other classmates. He tried to modify his behavior but intrinsically he aspires for the same. We used same corrective measures repeatedly (1) showing empathy (2) being compassionate with him (3) fixing his seat with strict order and everything was as usual since it was not such a big issue. Notwithstanding we were very clear that Mr. Tappu should not carry this negative habit for a long time so we were trying our best to correct it on different level. It may be possible that this mild behavior can be converted into an aggressive nature to do something. We never used to miss an opportunity of observing, praising and reprimanding him.

One day an amazing incident occurred in the morning assembly. We were talking on characteristics of a good person.  We should polish our shoes on daily basis and also discussed all essential qualities of a good student. Mr. Tappu’s shoes were shining. I called him to stand in front of all students. Although, he was a confident student however he was little nervous. He was not aware the reason for standing i.e. (for punishment/for praise). I asked students to clap for him for his shining shoes. Then, he gained his confidence. Ok, it was good for him. Since, we used to scold and reprimand him on various occasions for various silly mistakes in the classroom. I went to his class and once again surprised him. I called him on teacher’s teaching platform. I asked him, “Why did I call you? He was really confused whether it was punishment and praise for him. I embraced and patted him for his well polished shoes before classmates. We did not know, “ how did he perceive this act”  but since then Mr. Tappu is most obedient boy in the class, neither he changes his  seat and tries to come on first bench, nor he runs fast at departure time to reserve his favorite front seat in the school bus.

We use various techniques to modify child misbehavior. Empathy is one of the greatest virtues to handle student misbehavior in the school premises. Wise teacher initiates corrective measure at early stage. No behavior is permanent. Human beings’ behavior is always at a flux. We learn and also relearn it. Our behavior can be modified at any stage of life. It may take time for behavioral modification but it is certain that student’s misbehavior can be corrected at any moment of life if he comes in contact with a wise teacher.

Wise teacher takes necessary action at early stage of student’s misbehavior because it is very easy to correct it but when a student becomes rigid and stringent, it may be hard for teacher to change it in a short span of time. Students’ misbehavior can be corrected and modified no matter how much stringent and rigid. It may take a little longer time. We should avoid those situations and circumstances in the classroom due to which a child becomes rigid to repeat act of misbehaving in the classroom.

When we train a mind, mind becomes rational; when we train a heart human being becomes humane. (जब हम एक मन को प्रशिक्षित करते हैं, तो मन तर्कसंगत बन जाता है, जब हम दिल को प्रशिक्षित करते हैं, तो इंसान मानव हो जाता है।) Wise teacher trains simultaneously students’ mind and heart. Let us! Be wise to become a good teacher who trains students to be a good human being.

Student Misbehavior- Is parent responsible for children’s bad behavior ?

Student Misbehavior- parents responsible for children’s bad behavior

Human being understands language of love, emotion and passion. Educator handles 21st century kids in the school. Kids are active and smart. Sophisticated gadgets become essential need for survival. Nowadays, parent nurtures a child in a nucleus nature. 2010s decade born children are vocal and electronic gadgets lover. Parents wish to provide all the luxuries for their children, which a 1980s-1990s born parent might not used/might, not be available for them to use at that time. Parents are economically sound.

Every parent of this world is intelligent and intellectual personality for his kids. They think surely better for their kids. Children learn all the values right from tender age of habit formation. They watch each and every activity of their parent at home. Nowadays, parent offers his smart phone to the kids in a very tender age because child will be engaged and s/he could perform day to day task at home.  Parent fulfills all the wishes of his kids. This activity satisfies need of both parent and child; parent feels relax and child also feels mental relax with voice, pictures, songs, video, video games etc. Every time we repeat same activities that lay the foundation of negative behavior in a child.

My friend mr. Yadav was in a party with his elder and younger son. His elder son (40 months old) child was watching a serial Bal Hanuman. Younger son (15 months old ) child was crying so Mr. Yadav wanted to give him mobile. When Mr. Yadav requested his elder son to give the mobile for his younger brother, he had thrown the mobile in the ground and ran away from there. I was completely confused to see all these activities. In fact this is common scene in country side as well as urban area. Who is responsible for this act? Who will be cursed for this act?

Illiterate, literate, educated and uneducated parent stated several times in informal or formal communication, “ I think, (a) child should not be pressurized (b) I do not give pressure on  my child (c) child does not study in a pressure (d) sir, s/he does not hear anyone in the family (e) sir, s/he is very rigid (f) sir, his mind is very sharp, s/he operates Smart phone very fast  (g) sir, s/he does not want to write on notebook. If I ask something, s/he replies very fast but does not write at all. I stuck at the moment, (a) who will correct them (b) who is responsible for this rigid behavior (c) if a child does not listen/hear/obey his/her father/mother at home; how will s/he hear/obey teacher at school and in the classroom?

Parent spends a lot of money on paying school fee. S/he wishes her child to be a unique person. Parent builds child’s strong personality at home. Whatever a child learns at home, s/he carries it to the school and classroom.  Parent inculcates different human values at home.

A paradoxical situation is occurred in child life. Parent allows child to do all good and bad things without any obstruction and reminder at home but expect different school stakeholder teacher, principal and other person to inculcate all human values. Homeschooling fails to do it; formal schooling fails to create magical effect in the school which resulted in a conflict personality.

Parent is an image builder.  A child learns a lot of values at home. Parent’s nurturing style makes a big difference. When a child passes through a tender age, parent ignores all his/her mistakes and fulfills all demands unconditionally. Parent wants to provide the best facility available in the society. We treat each and every bad behavior of a child as his/her childish nature but we forget that child is framing a behavior, a habit and an attitude which is not good for both the stakeholders. Gradually, we start noticing that child becomes so rigid and inflexible. Once a child frames a set of good or bad habit, it becomes too much difficult to mould in positive direction. Parent feels unable to control because now child does not listen/obey his parent. Child has his own condition to do several activities. Parent becomes apprehensive and fearful to take necessary action to mould his behavior.

Parents nurturing style at home plays crucial role in child’s behavior formations. Why does a child misbehave at school? Does a parent instill values at home? We observe various reasons for child misbehavior at home and at school.

Ill treated parents

Child is nature. S/he blooms in the lap of parental field. Proper development of a child is prime responsibility of a parent. Generally we observe in family, society and school that sensible parent nurtures his/her child sensibly. If a parent is not so much caring for his/her kids and s/he does not want to spend time with kids, then his kids do not show moderate behavior at school.

No guardianship at home

Parent physical presence at home makes a big difference but if a parent is present at home but does not care his kids can create too big difference. It creates a void in a child’s life. Sensible guardianship at home helps child to behave properly at home. Child becomes a torn personality.

Lack of poor observation and guidance at home

Mother plays great role in shaping a child as a good human being. Mother usually shares her observation with husband and finally they take a wise decision for their kids. If parent could not keep his/her child in proper observation and if s/he fails to guide child in right direction then child becomes a torn personality.

Over protected and over possessed students

If a parent is so much possessive and over protective for his/her child, then child forms a negative attitude which reflects everywhere i.e. in family, society and school. Over protective child customizes each and everything according to his/her wish and present himself as a victim before parent. Parent takes this issue as an ego-“my son/my daughter”. 21st century kids are smart. They know their parent weakness. This attitude outcome is always negative.  Generally it is observed that overprotective and over possessive parent misbehaves with teacher in school, shouts in school office or so and so many.  Parent’s  pampered students

So many parents feel too much pride for their son and daughters. They pamper their child. Pampered child behaves same as over protected and over possessed child.

Having feelings of superiority complex or inferiority complex due to various individual as well as environmental aspects i.e. educated family, uneducated family, poor or wealthy life styles, physical stature. School is a pious place. Everyone wears same uniform and studies under a same roof. Everyone pays same amount of school fee. Sometimes it is observed that it is parent who develops a superiority complex in his/her child; his child behavior is not praiseworthy in the school.

We are living in a globalized world. Everyone has same opportunity to avail existing facilities in this world. A wise parent develops positive attitude right at the beginning of childhood. Gradually, child becomes habituated to show human values with parent, family members, society and teachers.

Wise parent develops his child as a sensible citizen who cares for self and society. A child is a child; pure, pious and virtuous. Parenting makes a big difference. Let, be a smart and sensible parent for nurturing a better world citizen !
