Lesson Plan for Teaching Gifted Students-Tips and Techniques for Effective Classroom Management

Nobody  is inferior and nobody is superior, one is just oneself. Educator identifies inherent capacity of students. He nurtures the inherent talent to become more efficient and more skilled;  to do something more innovative, more expressive, more novel for the welfare of the universe. A classroom consists of mix group of learners i.e. academically good, average and poor in academic performance. A classroom consists of different types of learners i.e. visual, auditory, kinesthetic so on and so forth.

Preparing good lesson plan which caters the need of different types of learners is essential quality of a teacher. Teacher prepares the best lesson plan for ensuring effective teaching learning in the classroom. It is really a challenging job for a teacher to cater the needs of all different types of students in a class. Gifted students always pose a challenge before a teacher. They are intelligent students. They have sharp memory. Gifted students develop understanding of a topic very fast. They complete the classwork and home work on time. Sometimes gifted students complete the task very soon in the classroom. They can not sit idle in the classroom. They may feel boredom. They start doing mischievous acts which may create discipline problem in the classroom.

A wise teacher prepares an intensive lesson plan for gifted students to execute a better classroom management skill. Advance planning of topic/lesson helps educator to create learning environment in the classroom. Teacher should use best available materials to cater the need of brilliant students of the class.

Best material related to the concerned teaching topic

A wise teacher prepares best teaching materials for his teaching topic. A teacher fulfills needs of all students of a classroom. No students’ progress should be hamper in a classroom. Teacher has to think progress of all students. It may take a little more time to develop understanding of teaching topic for average and below average performer of the class, however it may be possible that gifted learners will complete the task very soon; therefore a wise teacher produce advance material to the gifted students and guides them to complete it in certain time. Teacher engages gifted students through producing good materials with students. Teacher arranges all materials well in advance for handling gifted students in the classroom.

Advanced questions for good students i.e. worksheet, practice paper, HOTS questions

Wise teacher develops worksheet, practice paper and different HOTS questions for various gifted students in the classroom. Generally gifted students solve all simple and basic textual question easily. Teacher prepares HOTS questions. When general students solve factual and global questions in the classroom that time teacher distributes some HOTS questions to the gifted students. It keeps students engaged in the classroom. Usually teacher prepares all these questions in advance which saves teacher times and help him to manage the class effectively.

Extended challenging alternative activities for good students to enhance thinking skills

Activity based teaching learning process maximize learning in the classroom, but sometimes it creates chaos in the classroom if the teacher could not design alternative advanced activities for gifted students. Designing alternative advanced activities for the best performers of the class helps teacher to take necessary required action for all learners. It ensures maximum involvement of each and every learner in the classroom. Gifted students utilize maximum time in learning activities. As soon as gifted students complete a given task, teacher personally assign a new challenging task to solve in the classroom. When students become busy in performing advanced task, then teacher handles other students of the class smartly.

Proper time management for different tasks and activities

Gifted students are usually independent learners. They perform all the task within a time. Teacher prepares his lesson plan precisely and s/he designs task minutely with minute to minute activities. Teacher prepares lesson plan properly i.e. preparation/ ice breaking activities, presentation of topic , students activities during the lesson , evaluation of learning through different tools during the lesson and final assessment before final bind up of the class. He shares time limit with students and encourages students to finish the task withing the time.

Share instructions precisely to avoid confusion in the class

Wise teacher shares precise and concrete guidelines to avoid confusion among students in the classroom. His instructions quench the curiosity of all different types of learners in the classroom. They follow teacher’s guidelines to complete the task on time. Insturctions and guidelines related to learning activties should contains less words but it should be effective. It saves time in the classroom. Gifted students focus on completing tasks rather clarifying doubts over ‘how to complete the task’. Effective teacher uses his guidelines for effective learning outcomes in the classroom.

Nobody is inferior and nobody is superior.  No palm line and no thumb impression are same in this world. Every child is unique. Every child’s learning style is unique. We are unique.Teacher explores the fathomless world of knowledge before the gifted students.

Lesson Plan : Importance and Benefits of an Effective Lesson Planning

Learning is a complex phenomenon. Educators’ subject knowledge and their skills of handling different kinds of learners at different pace, in different society, state and nation make them a facilitator, a guide and torch bearer of educational world. Educators’ well thought planning and execution of planning maximize learning in the classroom.

A well developed lesson plan is a road map of a wise educator. Educator’s expertise is reflected in his/her lesson plan. It is architecture of teacher’s expertise.

A wise teacher prepares well his/her teaching topics. S/he evaluates his learners’ need well in advance. A wise educator always weighs each aspect of teaching learning process clearly before entering in the classroom/meeting students in the classroom. A wise educator asks him/herself following questions?

Lesson planning depends on the teacher interest and expertise. It is observed that on same lesson plan format, same subject teacher adopts different teaching techniques to teach a particular topic. Individual teacher of same subject may design different activity, adopt different teaching styles and use different teaching aids. Planning a lesson is solely depending on an individual.

Educator needs to create learning interest during teaching. Expert teacher not only create learners’ interest but sustain learners’ learning interest throughout the lesson.  A well thought and well planned lesson maximize learning in the class. Teacher adopts policy of flexibility during the teaching. Sometimes a good teacher modifies his lesson plan on the actual observation of students’ interest and understanding during teaching. Ideas of teaching can be included during teaching process; however learners’ interest is always on high priority for a wise educator.

When we closely monitor different teacher, different subject teacher, different school, state and nation’s lesson plan, we find same values, however writing style of lesson plan may differ from one culture to another culture and from one school to another school or from one group of schools to another group of schools. Effective learning is the soul nature of writing integrated lesson plan. Students’ learning is educator’s sole purpose. Students exist at the centre in pedagogical perspectives. Proper planning, relevant activities, relevant presentations, relevant questions, relevant illustrations, integration of life skills and integration of technology help wise educator to impart quality education and effective learning in the classroom.

Notebook Correction: Important Tips and Techniques for Ensuring Quality Learning

Teaching is an art. It demands a lot of expertise and patience while checking notebooks. Errors are integral parts of learning process. Do not create error threatening environment; at the same time sensitize your learners gradually to write accurately and fluently. “In order to achieve an effective error correction method, it is very important for teachers to have a clear understanding of the nature of errors. As Corder (1967, cited in Cook, 1995: 22)”

Notebooks: reflection of a student’s personality

Generally when we take a student’s notebook for correction, student’s personality reflects in the notebook.  A wise student’s different subject notebooks appear in a good condition. He maintains a standard format. We find each and every minute detail on the notebook i.e. properly covered notebooks with primary information, properly maintained index, title of different lessons, complete class work and home work, neat and clean handwriting, less spelling mistakes, and quality contents. We can judge student’s personality partially if not completely by going through his notebooks.

Teacher’s prime job

Teacher’s prime job is to ensure quality teaching in the classroom. Student’s notebook is one the best means to observe effect of our teaching. To write keys points, spelling, key terms and question answer in a notebook is to ensure an effective way of  understanding the concept. It is an evidence of learning because student revises his learning time to time for fulfilling different academic purposes.

Big Challenge for a teacher

Completing a class work and homework are big challenge for academically weak students. Writing works involve a lot of seating and patience. Teacher develops right attitude for maintaining notebooks properly among students from day 1st. Generally teacher faces a big challenge from academically weak students, since these students show least interest in study; they do not complete their notebook on time. Good teacher adopts different techniques for ensuring that students not only complete the notebook on time but also submit it for checking.

Classroom strategies for checking notebooks

Self correction / Peer correction: – Give students a chance, and time, to correct themselves, Students can also correct notebooks of one another. Peer correction often helps to create a positive class atmosphere as students realize teacher is not the only source of error correction and they can learn a lot from one another.

Correction must be done by concerned teacher

Wise teacher ensures timely correction of notebooks. Generally we are accountable of student’s learning. Smart teachers correct students’ notebook by developing their own check. A good teacher ensures proper notebook completion from each one in the class.

Pending work will be checked by teacher taking over (left teacher)

Generally it is observed that a concerned subject teacher have left the school job in between the academic session. So, it is our prime duty to check left over notebooks by previous teacher.

Ensure answer must be relevant to the question/ don’t leave scope for ambiguous/meaningless   answer

Wise teacher ensures that the students have written quality answer. We develop habit of writing meaningful, contextual and relevant answer.

Major error/correction —ask to re- do the work after teacher’s check

Teacher ensures that student has re-written the wrong spelling and meaningless answer once again to avoid confusion before the examination.

Spelling errors to be written correctly

Teacher instills a good habit among his students right from the beginning to re-write miss-spelt word. He encourages his students to avoid bad habit of overwriting because it shows student’s inability.

Underline the incorrect and tick or a double placed under the error

A wise teacher usually sensitizes his students for different mistakes on the notebook. He underlines the incorrect answer and tick or marks a double line under the error.  Good teachers do not underline all the mistakes at a time. It may be disheartening and discouraging moment for a student. They may feel bad and form a negative attitude towards learning and towards doing hard work. Nurture the individual’ nature of committing mistakes and evaluates the causes behind present situation. It will take time but improvement will be there.

Indicate the type of errors; Missing word, incorrect construction, ambiguous answer

Generally a teacher indicates different types of error mentioned in the table with relevant symbols to avoid confusion

Symbol Meaning
SP Spelling Error
T Tense/Verb
> Word Missing
P Punctuation
U A new sentence is unnecessary, connect your ideas
WF Word Formation
  • English/Hindi:-Minute observation of Spelling and capitalization/punctuation and form/grammar/diction/sentence-structure
  • Notebook system of theme correcting
Error Correction
He tried in vain to convince the balance of the students. He tried in vain to convince the rest of the students.
My brother and myself consider this is my best photograph. My brother and I consider this my best photograph.

When a student realizes just what is his weakness, his study for examination as well as his regular work assumes his definiteness that keeps him floundering around. He knows exactly where he must apply his best effort. (Stith Thomson, Jastor)

Notebooks Correction techniques varies in different concerned subject

Quality notebook correction depends on concerned teachers’ expertise and skill. Mathematics teacher adopts a different method to correct students’ notebook i.e. formulas, application of formulas, different process, theorem etc has been written precisely on the notebooks. Concerned Science and Social Science teacher guides his students to write different topics neatly and cleanly to avoid confusion. Teacher encourages following things to do:-

  • Geometrical Work/Map Work/Drawing/Diagrams:- Neatly drawn diagrams , Clear and legible labeling , Simple , plain and fully informative diagrams, Use a sharp pencil  for geometrical work,  map work and diagrams

Write encouraging remarks/be particular about the specific comment

Teacher’s positive remarks on the notebook effectively make a great appeal and sense in the student’s mind. Teacher makes his learners sensible. He writes rational, relevant and concrete remark on student’s notebook. Teacher should write detail comments to sensitize the students. Writing details comments/remarks do not help until we do proper follow up as a reminder. When we do regular follow up; student thinks that my teacher still remembers my mistakes.

  • Suggest ways and means to improve writing habit/questions/spelling/grammatical correction/handwriting
  • Kindergarten and Primary Teachers are encouraged to give stickers, stars, and smiley faces as reward for students
  • Handwriting should be improved in due course of time/provide help to your student
  • Give emphasis on neatness of work and maintenance of the notebooks
  • Praise the quality of the work not the individual
  • Please indicate what is good about the worke. Good/Fair/Excellent/ meaningful question/handwriting/good content

Help long absentee in completing pending work

Teachers’ main concern is to ensure learning. We should help students, who were absent from the class for various reason.

  • Incomplete work must be rechecked after completion (even if a student is absent for 1-2-3 days, or student is weak/not interested to write   teacher must ensure completion of notebook and checking of  the notebook, otherwise it will be counted as teacher’s fault  )
  • Permit students of long absence to photocopy notes (after discussion with the HODS)
  • Late submission after deadline is to be checked with written reminder

Respecting an individual’s dignity is equally respecting our own dignity.

We are teacher. We are motivator and facilitator. We facilitate learning in the classroom. We ensure quality education in our surrounding. A good teacher creates learner friendly environment and shows faith in the capacity of each individual. It may be possible that 8-10 percent students in a classroom do not show interest in learning. We admit it in our professional life. A good teacher provides every possible support for his learners to ensure learning; no matter what are possible difficulties before us. Teacher should avoid very harsh and discouraging verbal and written comment for a student. Respecting an individual’s dignity is equally respecting our own dignity.

They may not complete their notebooks timely, may have filthy handwriting, and may commit several spelling mistakes but at the utmost inner core, he wants to change his present inabilities. He is searching a right human being and we can be the right person for molding him into an integrated human being. We remind students’ mistakes and we do follow up for expected correction but we will not put a stamp on a student’s personality that he cannot improve. I firmly believe that teacher consistent efforts with a human heart can bring massive change in a student’s life. Let! Be the first to become a game changer!

Ownership of Learning: Strategies for getting students to take responsibility for their learning

learning theory
Nobody is inferior and nobody is superior, one is just oneself. Unique individual possesses unique inbuilt capacity. Educator activates individual’s inbuilt capacity. He helps individual to explore his inbuilt capacity. A wise educator instigates desire for learning. Educator sole responsibility is to awaken learning sense of students and guide them to right direction in a right approach. Educator designs student’s learning techniques.

Awake Learning Desire –Develop Sense of Learning Ownership

When we awake learning desire of our students, we develop a sense of ownership in each and every learner of our classroom. Wise educator analyzes individual’s capacity intelligently and ensures his/her involvement in process of learning. When we create a positive learning circle in the classroom and students sense it positively then we lead them to a point of learning where they feel intrinsic motivation to explore depth of learning. They share their understanding with teacher, peers and friends, they feel a sense of caring from peers and teachers, they feel free to make mistakes and of course they find right platform to express their voice. Positive learning environment enables students to make appropriate learning choices which are resulted in their self –determination and intrinsic motivation to inquire, to investigate and to explore more and more.

Inculcate Democratic Values-“Yes you can” and “I believe in you”.

Educator instills democratic values when he incorporates sense of learning ownership among students. Integrating democratic values in classroom occurs when educator respects the dignity of an individual and considers individual as complete personality who can think like us. It is a sense of equality where the learner and educator stand on same platform and share knowledge with one another. It is a process to trust the individual’s dignity, capacity and capability. When educator develops a sense of learning autonomy among learners, then he says; “Yes You Can” and “I believe in you”.

Develop Ownership for Each One

When we talk developing a sense of ownership among good, average and below average academic performers of the class, we develop an autonomy supportive setting in the classroom. In fact, it has positive effects on different learners. Wise educators develop a sense of ownership among different types of learners. We instil this skill on various occasion of learning in the classroom and in the school campus.

Setting Own Learning Goals

Wise educator make them a sensible learner, who knows what to learn, how to learn and why to learn. Wise educator help learners to decide own learning goals. The day learner comes to realize that this is the ‘goal’ which I want to achieve, s/he starts working hard to achieve it since, s/he knows objective of his/her learning.

Setting Own Deadline To Complete The Tasks

Wise educator works together with all students, guide them and motivate them to complete the various task on time. Completing a task on time surely enhances the confidence and self esteem of students, because nature of task does not matter but completion of task does matter in building confidence and framing positive learning attitude among students. It develops a sense of punctuality. The day a student learns the value of completing a task on time, the day s/he leads towards a way to perfection. Ruchi is a gifted student of class 8. She excels in all learning direction. She shared her feeling in a group meeting that if she completes one task at right time, she is able to complete another task also on time, otherwise pending works creates unnecessary burden and also kills other task’s time.

Sensitize Student To Be Self Dependent

A person’s personality is total sum of the time s/he spends with his/her family, friend, school and society. Everyone becomes a teacher for us. In spite of all these stakeholders of our learning; school plays crucial role in our learning in most of the cases. A wise educator develops a sense of self dependency among learners. It is to make them free from sole dependency on teacher and textbook. An active student explores all available resources. He develops own way of learning styles, making notes and doing other learning works. He reads his own, interprets the meaning of text and seeks help from educator in the time of difficulties.

Sensitize Students To Think Independently On Any Relevant Scientific And Social Issues

Thinking is a skill. It develops over a period of time with keen eyes to observe and interpret knowledge, with the help of intensive reading and with the help of vast experiences of life. A wise educator helps students to think their own on various topics and life situation. Basically they explore the rational knowledge of students. They initiate and stimulate the inbuilt knowledge of individual in various context and references. A wise educator helps students to bloom and spread the fragrance of knowledge. He opens a door and an opportunity for his learners. Sometimes a learner thinks rationally and has concrete ideas than the educator. Educator identifies this capacity and establishes a sense to be an independent thinker on various basic and crucial points in pedagogical paradigm.

Sensitize Students To Identify Their Own Weakness And Strength

To become a knowledgeable person is one aspect of life and to become sensible to our weakness and strength help us to become integrated human beings. Educator achieves a great success when he ensures the ability to identify own weakness and strength among each and every learner. Knowing oneself is a difficult phenomenon. A wise student always ready to accept his weakness and always ready to improve his weakness, because he thinks that his weakness is a great hurdle in his learning. He challenges himself to overcome his own weakness. Tappu analyzed the last term exam result and he came to know that he could not practice well on quality content in Social Science. He got less marks in Social Science. He prepared well, used to show his written answer to his mentor and frequently asked about his weak point to his teacher. He worked on his teacher’s guidelines and developed a good command on quality answer.

Sensitize Students To Analyze Their Own Performance Data

When we evaluate our own performance in different situations, it helps us to re-evaluate our process of learning. We judge our efficiency and drawbacks. We evaluate our skills. We become able to reflect upon men, method and materials. Subham formed a peer group of learners. This group fixed the TARGET to qualify a National Level Test. Group of learners appears in different pre-preparation test series before final examination. They analyze their test score in an interval. They develop their strategies on the basis of their final score card i.e. which topics need more focus, where they have to  do more practice , what type of resource material they will use for next pre-test examination etc. Subham endorsed that critical analysis of their own performance data is like a mirror for them. It truly reflects upon their planning, preparation and execution. It helps them to re-think, reshuffle and reschedule their way of working on desired goal.

Sensitize Students To Review Steps And Strategies To Improve Weak Points

Data interpretation gives an insight for learners.  If we want to increase success ratio, we review our strategies over a period of time. Educator sensitizes their learners to review their steps and strategies to improve weak points. Everyone does not do it in day to day life. A wise learner always weighs his capacity and capability in a certain contest. They plan ahead for future so that they should not repeat previous mistakes over and over. As famous author Alexander Pope quoted once, “To err is human” (An Essay on Criticism). I firmly believe that smart people think innovatively and work according to their plan. He may commit 100 of mistakes during execution of those planning but always tries to review his mistakes and make an improved plan. Committing error is not a sin but committing mistakes again and again is a sign of conflict personality.  A wise educator nurtures an individual in such way that s/he becomes sensible enough to review his/her planning for the better learning outcome. Educator creates a circle of comfort zone so that students share their positive as well as weak points with peer, parent and teacher. A wise educator hears the unvoiced sound of a student.

Sensitize Students To Develop An Improved Plan Based On Anlyzed Data

A wise educator helps students to prepare an improved plan based on analyzed data. He discusses better options and alternate on present situation. He helps students to compare and contrast before redrafting previous plan. He shares the better ideas with students. A wise educator discusses previous experiences on certain context so that students get an insight. Ms. Rimpi a class 12 students was facing a lot of problems in developing deep conceptual understanding in a unit of physics. She consulted so many books but could not understand that particular topic. She shared her problems with Mr. Rai an experienced physics teacher of that school. Ms. Rimpi worked on the ideas given by Mr. Rai and performed quite well in compare to previous test. Integration of Mr. Rai subject expertise and vast experience and execution on the Mr. Rai suggestions by Ms.Rimpi converted into a better learning outcome.

Sensitize Students To Execute Those Steps And Strategies To Convert Efforts Into Visible Changes

Educators subject expertise as well as his/her teaching experiences provides a golden platform for students to execute different learning strategies in right directions to convert into a visible changed. We observed this with the case of Ms. Rimpi while dealing with physics problems. Educator always creates a learning environment in the classroom. He breaks the barrier of complexity of learning, motivate students to think rationally. He supports student sometimes beyond the limit to break the conventional thinking box and create a new era of learning.

Teacher activates inherent and inbuilt capacity of an individual.

Educator is architecture. He designs an integrated human being under his kind guidance and visionary leadership.

Teacher activates inherent and inbuilt capacity of an individual.  When an educator instills learning autonomy in the classroom, he helps students to develop the capacity to make choices, he helps students to understand their learning interest, he helps students how to design learning choices and monitor the positive and negative consequences of their choices, he encourages students to make choices and exercise self-initiative in learning activities, helps students to recognize and manage their emotions and finally helps students to watch how their beliefs work in different situations. In fact, it is golden opportunity for educator to share their thoughts and feeling with students.
