Examination Preparation Tips

Writing skill demands a great patience, a lot of practices and will power to edit your own written text, arranging it properly and systematically for writing a meaningful sentence and developing a meaningful paragraph. This is in fact, beautiful art to draw attention to the reader without being present at that time for explaining, actually what have you written and what message do you wish to convey to your reader. It fact, writing a meaningful paragraph depends on the practices you do before the final examination. Teacher does not know the identity of student; s/he only knows what is written in the answer sheets. S/he interprets and evaluates what has been written actually.

Getting good marks in any board examination in “writing section” heavily depends on the way a student practices during an academic session. First of all, board students should consider the ‘question pattern of English Language Paper i.e.

  1. How many questions will consist in a question paper?
  2. How many types of questions i.e. Formal/Informal Letter, Story Writing, Essay Writing, Article Writing, Biography, Message, Notice Writing, Report Writing
  3. What are the prescribed words length and marking scheme for each and every question of ‘writing skill section’?

English Communicative (101)

Section B: Writing And Grammar                                                                                                     30Marks

Q. 3: Writing an Article/ Descriptive Paragraph (person/ place/ event/diary entry) in about 100-150 words based on visual or verbal cue/s. The questions will be thematically based on the prescribed books. (8 marks) Q. 4: Writing a short story based on a given outline or cue/s in about 150 – 200 words. (10 marks)

English Language and Literature (184)

Section B: Writing And Grammar                                                                                                            30Marks

Q 3: Formal letter complaint / Inquiry / placing order / Letter to the editor / article in about 100-120 words. The questions will be thematically based on the prescribed books. (8 marks) Q. 4: Writing a short story based on a given outline or cue/s in about 150-200 words. (10 marks)

What are objectives of Section B: Writing and Grammar?

Section B: Writing and Grammar consists of 5 questions. 2/5 questions are based on “writing skill” remaining 3 questions is based on Grammar. We will discuss in details of first 2 questions which is  based on writing skill.

Creative expression of an opinion, reasoning, justifying, illustrating, appropriate style and tone, using appropriate format and fluency, (Secondary School Curriculum)

Generally if a question carries 8 marks then the evaluator gives marks on the basis of following criteria:-

Content- 4 Marks (precise, concise, specific, exact, accurate, details, summarizing, illustrious, relevant examples, creative thoughts, logical and judicious points related to the topic)

Fluency -2 Marks (Development of ideas in sequence, chronological order, flow of thoughts in right order)

Accuracy- 2 Marks (Grammatical Accuracy-Meaningful sentence, Spelling)

If a question carries 10 marks then the evaluator gives marks on the basis of following criteria:-

Content- 6 Marks (precise, concise, specific, exact, accurate, details, summarizing, illustrious, relevant examples, creative thoughts, logical and judicious points related to the topic)

Fluency -2 Marks (Development of ideas in sequence, chronological order, flow of thoughts in right order)

Accuracy- 2 Marks (Grammatical Accuracy-Meaningful sentence, Spelling)

Writing style differs from one question to another question but what does not change that is writing a meaningful, well developed and well-structured paragraph in appropriate language based on (given inputs) literary points. Students need to plan, organize and present ideas coherently. Student uses wonderful ideas (given inputs) as an opportunity for him to get ready made ideas.

Report Writing Skill

Wise students practice well before examination. Practicing different questions of ‘writing skill’ help to achieve different level of perfection and help students to score good marks. Generally it is observed in board examination that average students can score 14/18 but the best students’ fights for getting full marks in writing section.

Wise students learn the art of planting, cutting, watering and doing other activity from a gardener and sculpture artist who makes a beautiful statue by giving days and nights with full dedication. Developing writing skill demands skill of a painter/sculpture artist who works hard without any complain. When a student writes so many articles, essays, letters, story and other genres continuously, showing these genres to other friend, classmates and teacher and  takes regular feedback for her/his weak points.

Wise students try to write articles, story, report and letter on different topics for developing correct writing speed, good handwriting style and command of vocabulary.

Extensive reading skill and intensive writing habit help students to incorporate key words and key term in their writing. Only one thing should be remember that our writing should be so specific, concise and creative for expressing the correct message to the reader.
